Early mornings in this part of Mauritius carry a unique magic, where the soft hues of dawn signal the start of a new adventure. Our latest trip was filled with excitement as we set out for a kayaking experience—a striking contrast to our first leisurely sojourn on the island.
An Eclectic Mix of Nature and Culture
The transition from the tranquility of dawn to the bustling energy of Tamarin Bay was palpable. Historically a fishing hub, the area has transformed into a vibrant tourist spot, offering an array of water sports that engage with the crystalline waters of the Indian Ocean. The former fishing vessels have given way to countless jet boats, while our choice remained traditional—a simple kayak.
Unlike our past attempts in California, the atmosphere in Tamarin was warm and inviting. The excitement was compounded as we prepared to embark on our kayaking adventure, greeted by a friendly local guide fluent in both English and French, catering to the diverse group of international paddlers.
Encountering Nature’s Wonders
The primary aim of our kayaking journey was to encounter the local dolphins, known for their acrobatic displays. While we patiently waited in the gentle embrace of the lacquered waters, the dolphins seemed to have sensed our arrival and chose to remain elusive on this day. However, the tranquility of our surroundings provided its charms. As we paddled along the coastline, the majestic Le Morne Brabant loomed to one side, while the shimmering sands of Flic en Flac stretched along the other.
Though dolphin sightings may have escaped us, nature offered other marvels. The serenity of kayaking upstream through the calm waters of the adjacent river brought us closer to the heart of this lush paradise, where nature thrives without boundaries. With every stroke of our paddles, we became more connected to the rhythms of the earth.
