The Hotel Industry Embraces Sustainable Practices
In an inspiring move towards eco-friendliness, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has upgraded its Hotel Sustainability Basics program to an independent certification scheme. This initiative seeks to meet strict new regulations set by the European Union for environmental claims, offering hotels a clear way to showcase their commitment to sustainability.
A Global Movement
Since its inception in 2022, the Hotel Sustainability Basics has seen remarkable adoption, with over 8,000 hotels from 85 countries participating. This framework simplifies sustainability by providing 12 actionable steps — from energy efficiency to waste reduction — that all hotels can implement, regardless of their size or type. The structure helps hotels navigate a landscape that increasingly values transparency and environmental responsibility.
A Trustworthy Certification for Travelers
Travelers are becoming more conscious of the companies they support, seeking out accommodation options that prioritize sustainability. With independent third-party certification, WTTC’s upgraded program will instill confidence among guests, thereby positively influencing their travel choices. As Gloria Guevara, WTTC’s President & CEO, states, this certification reflects the evolving perceptions of both the industry and the consumers.
The Path Ahead: Basics Plus
What's next for hotels eager to elevate their sustainability practices? WTTC is launching a program called Basics Plus later this year, in collaboration with the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (WSHA). This will provide hotels with a structured progression towards advanced sustainability efforts. Together, both programs pave the way for hotels to achieve net-positive hospitality.
Join the Movement
As the hospitality industry transitions towards sustainable practices, the involvement of both businesses and travelers is crucial. Whether you’re planning your next getaway or considering where to stay, look for hotels committed to sustainability. Your choices can drive the positive changes we wish to see in the world.
